Dental Implant

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a cylindrical and/or tapered post, typically made of titanium, which serves as a replacement for a tooth’s root. A connector called an abutment, is placed on, or built into the top of the dental implant. This connects the implant to the replacement tooth or teeth. Lastly, a crown (a replacement tooth) is custom made to match your natural teeth.

Why do people choose to get dental implants?

Dental implants are the most natural looking and feeling replacement for missing teeth. Dental implants do not slip or click when talking, laughing or eating. Dental implants are considered a healthy choice, as they help preserve the jawbone, keeping the facial structure together. They also prevent your natural teeth from shifting into the missing space.

What is the process for dental implants?

First the dentist checks to see if you have enough bone to receive an implant. This is done by a visual examination and also by looking at the patient’s x-rays. Based on that, the doctor will give you recommendations on how many and what type of implants you will need. The patient is numbed with local anaesthetic in the area where the implant will be placed. Next, the implants are placed into the bone. It is then either covered up by the gum, or a healing screw is placed on the implant. Depending on the treatment you are going to receive, an abutment and crown will be made immediately, or you may need to wait 3-4 months. The doctor makes this decision based on the type of bone and the treatment that was rendered.

Are dental implants right for me?

Dental implants help replace missing teeth that were lost from tooth decay or bone loss. They help prevent your natural teeth from shifting into the missing tooth’s space, and they help maintain the current way you bite. If it replaces a missing front tooth, it will make your smile look very natural.
